G3 - Interplay, aural skills and musical leadership

DESCRIPTION OF THE TEST

The test consists of two components: musical leadership, performed as a group of approximately 8 people, and aural skills, performed individually. The test takes approximately 2 hours.

MUSICAL LEADERSHIP AND INTERPLAY

You will lead the group in a musical activity that you have prepared at home, lasting a maximum of 10 minutes. The musical activity that you choose should include instrumental and/or vocal elements. You should lead and demonstrate using your voice and/or instrument. The group will consist of approximately 8 applicants to the Music Teacher Programme, all of whom will participate in the ensemble play and take turns to lead the group. The test takes approximately 90 minutes.

There will be a piano, keyboard, electric guitar, acoustic guitars, drums, bass guitar and rhythm instruments available. Feel free to bring your own instrument if you play another instrument than those listed here.

AURAL SKILLS

The test is performed individually. You will be asked to mimic rhythms and melodies. The test takes approximately 5 minutes.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

For a satisfactory result, you should be able to:

• demonstrate basic skills in reproducing rhythm and melody
• demonstrate basic skills in putting instructions into practice and collaborate with others in ensemble play
• demonstrate basic skills in leading an ensemble, where the components instruction, communication and knowledge of the selected material will be assessed
• demonstrate basic skills in instructing a group using your voice or instrument.

The total result of the G3-tests is assessed as Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory.
