NVivo - introductory workshops
Welcome to an introduction to NVivo, a software for qualitative data analysis. The introduction will be divided into two sessions.
Workshop 1: NVivo basics and thinking qualitative research digitally
In this workshop we first make a broad introduction of so-called Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) and the accompanying debates and discussions that continues to be associated with the use of such tools. We then focus specifically on Nvivo as we introduce this program by thinking about ways to translate a number of common themes in qualitative research into a digital format. Importantly, we highlight how the use of Nvivo (or other QDAS) can be helpful in many ways even if you only end up using parts of the program. We also stress the limitations of this kind of software and think about ways to combine digital tools with more traditional “analogue” techniques for qualitative research.
After the workshop you will be acquainted with setting up a project in Nvivo, importing data and basic project management within the program. In addition, the goal is to learn how to orient yourself in the panels, views and menus of the software as well as having you understand the functions of links, memos and annotations as tools for enhancing your analytical process.
For the purpose of this workshop, you are not required to bring your own material, however, the workshop will be of more value if you do.. Such a material could be interview transcriptions, pdf-documents or virtually any form of qualitative data. Please note, that we will focus on more traditional forms of text at this time.
DATE & TIME: Thursday October 17, 9.15-12.00
PLATS: 1E 425 (limited number of seats, pre-registration is required).
Workshop 2: Beginning analysis in NVivo with codes and cases
This workshop aims to show how Nvivo can be used to code qualitative data. We focus on understanding how coding digitally in many ways enhance the coding process as compared to a “pen, paper and scissors approach”. You will learn the practice of coding while also gaining insights into the way Nvivo handles cases and attributes (its approach to variables). Depending on time the workshop ends with brief illustrations of what you can do with Nvivo once you have a coded material. This includes basic so called “queries” and other techniques that can help you in your analysis.
The workshop presupposes experience with qualitative research and while we have time to briefly think about and discuss central concepts such as codes, themes and case logics this is not a methodology workshop. In addition, participants would benefit from having their own qualitative material available for coding as this will make the exercises more ‘real’. If you don’t have access to a material that can be used for this purpose please get in contact with us so that we can distribute our training dataset.
DATE & TIME: Friday October 18, 9.15-12.00
PLACE: 1E 425 (limited number of seats, pre-registration is required).
The workshops are led by Andreas Öjehag, senior lecturer in Political Science.
Practical information about the sessions
It is required that you have the NVivo program installed when you attend the course. If you have a computer provided by KAU you install the program through Software Center (Win) or through the application Self Service (Mac).
The introductory workshops are open for PhD students and researchers at Karlstad University. Pre-registration is required!
