Challenging musical canons: Evoking diversity in music practice and history
Western music history has largely favoured male artists, while women and non-binary performers and composers have largely been excluded from history writing. This has contributed to musical canons where important voices are missing.
How may canonical traditions in music be challenged and expanded, from a gender perspective? This seminar will present perspectives from Western classical music and jazz history, and explore results from research on gendered experiences among music students of today.
Music performance: works written or transcribed for classical guitar by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Sofia Gubaidolina and Petra Százi.
The seminar will be held in English and is open to all students and staff members at KAU.
