Research data is all data on which research results and conclusions are based. This may include raw experimental data, interview data, statistical analyses, data code or videos.
Research Data Management
The research data management process spans the entire life cycle of a research project. It includes collection, documentation, processing, storing, sharing and archiving. Future use of the material is facilitated by working in a structured manner and making the data accessible.
Benefits of good research data management practices:
- Easy to find and understand data when needed in the future
- Continuity in the research project despite any staffing changes
- Easy validation of data on which research publications are based
- Facilitating the sharing and re-use of data
- Increasing the visibility and citations of the research.

An increasing number of research funders require a data management plan included to the research application. Below are links to some of the most common funders and their pages about research data management.
Create a Data Management Plan with DMPonline
The tool DMPonline is available at Karlstad University, allowing researchers to easily create data management plans. DMPonline provides templates and support for creating them.
Remember to send the draft / completed data management plan to the Research data support team no later than one month before the project starts. The Research data support team will provide feedback as soon as possible with information about the data management plan that can provide appropriate support for the research project or if it needs to be revised or supplemented with additional information. Remember to register the data management plan in the diary when it is completed and update it if necessary during the project. Revised data management plan must also be registered in the diary.
