Home nursing and advanced home nursing
15.0 ECTS creditsThe course integrates Nursing (5 ECTS cr) and Medical Science (10 ECTS cr).
Instruction is in the form of lectures, group work, seminars, and a clinical placement (VFU, 4 weeks). Attendance at the clinical placement is mandatory (32 hours/week), and the ability to work independently is emphasised. The course is partly net-based (including on-campus meetings) and instruction and examination take place both online and at the university.
Students acquire in-depth knowledge of the role and responsibility of the district nurse/public health nurse in the interprofessional team for habilitation and rehabilitation of persons of all ages with disabilities, and study how disability affects life conditions and quality of life. The course covers the municipal organisation of and responsibility for services regulated in the Act on Support and Service to Persons with Disabilities (LSS).
Knowledge of the most common types of dementia is treated from the perspectives of medicine and care. Gerontology, geriatrics, and geriatric psychiatry are studied on the basis of current evidence. Person-centred nursing and the district nurse´s/ public health nurse's work in advanced home nursing are studied. Based on the care process, students learn about the planning and implementation of care for patients in need of advanced home nursing, for example, complex medical conditions and palliative care, with regard to cultural background, gender, and equality. Emphasis is placed on the importance of including next-of-kin in the care planning.
The district nurse´s/ public health nurse's specific knowledge and responsibility in intraprofessional and interprofessional teams are studied in terms of the district nurse´s / public health nurse's main area of expertise, which includes giving an account of and implementing current ordinances, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to home nursing regarding, for example, delegation and hygiene issues. The medical technology in advanced home nursing is studied in relation to guidelines and environmental and working environment aspects. During the clinical placement period, students develop their professional approach in terms of the responsibility and function of the public health nurse, both as a leader and in relation to development efforts, for patient safety and high quality nursing.
Based on research in the professional domain of the district nurse/ public health nurse, the course covers quantitative methods which are assessed in terms of the purpose, design, data collection, and analytical approach of scientific studies, as well as their validity and reliability. The use of statistical methods is included, as well as ways in which questionnaires and assessment tools can be used in nursing.
The leadership of the district nurse/public health nurse is treated for instance in terms of how it is possible to achieve results and organise and develop care together with others in a team, as well as how district nurses/public health nurses collaborate with others to plan and manage various types of care, both in health centers and in home care.
Students also reflect upon quality and patient safety measures taken by district nurses/ public health nurses and study this area based on potential effects in municipal health care from a patient and next-of-kin perspective.

A nursing degree and admission to a specialist nursing programme with a specialisation in public health nursing, plus upper secondary level Swedish 3 or Swedish as a second language 3 and English 6 or A, or equivalent

Selection is usually based on your grade point average from upper secondary school or the number of credit points from previous university studies, or both.
