Geomedia Speaker Series - Christian Licoppe
Augmented mobilities and encounters in urban public places: mobile locative media, from the case of Grindr to future smart cities - Professor Christian Licoppe, Telecom Paristech
The aim of this conference is to discuss the use of mobile locative media and the way the availability of various forms of location awareness and proximity awareness provides resources for the reshaping of mobilities (with the pervasive figure of the 'detour') and sociality in urban public places (with the rise in importance of encounters with 'pseudonymous strangers'). The argument will proceed in two steps.
- first a case study of a typical mobile locative media, the gay mobile dating application Grindr, displaying an ethnographic approach to locative media and enabling the fleshing out of some key concepts
- second a broader and more general discussion of common features of locative media and how they might reshape radically future mobility and sociality in urban public places.
