Game producer (60-credit master. Only in English)
Game producer is the role leading and coordinating teams in computer game development. A series of master courses for game producers is offered from autumn 2025 by Karlstad University.
An often experienced problem in game development is how to get several different competences to co-create engaging and consistent game experiences. Our education highlights challenges and solutions in organising inter-human communication in creative projects, within and between studios. The branch of game development is characterised by the mix of big global companies and the very many small studios, most interacting with each other in joint projects or contract relationships. We also discuss important aspects of business models for games, such as monetisation models relative to a specific game idea, and how to adapt development and maintenance costs to the business model.
Our “Game producer” curriculum consists of specially designed courses with guest lectures and workshops with industry representatives and researchers. The first course is of 30 credits, Game producer perspectives on game development (course code ISAD01). It runs during the whole autumn semester (Sep-Jan) and consists of four modules: Game development in context; Agile game development projects; Leadership in game development projects; and Scaling agile game development projects.
For spring 2026 there are two courses, Monetisation of digital games (7.5 cr) and Research methods in game development (7.5 cr), followed by individual thesis writing within the course Information Systems - Master's thesis for game producers (15 cr). The exam will be in Information Systems but the admission requirements are not subject-specific.
(Admission requirements to the “Game producer” courses: a degree of Bachelor of Science, Arts or Fine Arts, or a vocational diploma of at least 180 ECTS credits, or equivalent.)
Scheduling for "Game producer" courses is adjusted so that participants can commute to Karlstad when there are lectures, workshops, and study visits (normally 1-2 days a week).
