Buying insurances
When you move to Sweden there are a several insurances you need to be aware of and some to consider getting.
Karlstad University and State insurances
Karlstad University has an insurance for foreign visitors (SW: Försäkring för utländska besökare) for people from countries that do not have medical insurance agreements with Sweden. The insurance covers people who are here for a short period (less than a year).
Karlstad University does not provide a general health insurance, but if you are employed in Sweden for more than one year, you can and should make sure that you are registered in the Swedish social insurance system by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan). Sweden has a very generous social insurance system. Dental and eye care services are normally not included in the health insurances above.
Karlstad University has several other insurance policies for employees, for instance business travels and work injuries, covering injury at work, or on your way to or from work. If you wish, you can combine this with a private health insurance.
- Read more about our insurances on the university’s intranet Inslaget, once you receive access to it.
Insurances you should get private
In Sweden, you are not required to have household insurance but since most landlords require tenants to have one, we recommend that you get one regardless of the kind of accommodation you choose.
Around 80% of the working population in Sweden has an unemployment insurance. There are many different types of unemployment insurance – make sure to choose the insurance that suits you best. Generally, there is a monthly fee for your membership and you are guaranteed a certain percentage of your former salary for limited period.
