Adrian Muntean

My interests lie in understanding, translating and then exploring in mathematical terms the physical and social world around us. I am constantly looking for cross-disciplinary knowledge and connections to advance particularly Mathematical Sciences, and science in a broader context.

Currently, my main interest is focussed on: 

1. Multiscale mathematical analyses and multiscale modeling and simulations with applications on the effect of defects and other special internal structures on materials behavior (concrete, steel, paper);
2. Multiscale modeling and simulations of interacting particle systems with applications to crowd dynamics, steel plasticity, and manufacturing systems;
3. Asymptotic methods for PDEs;
4. Measure-valued evolution equations.

• Usually I teach the courses  "Fundamental Analysis," "Multiscale Analysis (Homogenization)", and "Introduction to Partial Differential Equations", "Mathematical Statistics". 
• Occasionally, I deliver crash-courses at MSc and PhD level in  both "Advances in Continuum Modeling", "Periodic Homogenization", and "Stochastic Differential Equations and Data-driven Modeling".
• Currently, I invest a lot of energy in building a Master Program in Industrial and Computational Mathematics in Karlstad.

Adrian Muntean obtained his MSc in mathematics from Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in 1999. He received his Dr. rer. nat. in 2006 at Bremen University, Germany, where he worked as Wissentschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (researcher) at the Zentrum fuer Technomathematik (Centre for Industrial Mathematics) during the period from 2001 to 2007. He continued to work as assitant professor in Applied Analysis with the Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands (2007-2015). His main activities were connected to two institutes CASA (Center for Analysis, Scientific Computing and Applications) and ICMS (Institute for Complex Molecular Systems), before becoming a full professor in mathematics at the Karlstad University in 2015. His research interest focuses on mathematical modeling with differential equations and interacting-particle systems and their applications to the "real world". His work spans the spectrum from fundamental to applied, with mathematical contributions to civil engineering, logistics, combustion engineering, soft matter and complexity, and contributions to asymptotic methods for differential equations with a particular focus on the theory of homogenization. Muntean received his Venia legendi in mathematics with a Habilitationsschrift at the University of Bremen (2011).  He held  visiting professor positions with the University of La Sapienza of Rome, Italy (in 2014 and 2022), with the Gran Sasso Science Institute in L'Aquila, Italy (in 2018), and with the University of Milan, Italy (in 2024). Muntean serves on the editorial board of three international journals  and three national ones: Advances in Mathematical Sciences and Applications (Gakko Tosho, Tokyo), Applicable Analysis (Taylor Francis), Networks and Heterogeneous Media (AIMS), ROMAI Journal (Journal of the Romanian Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), Acta Polytechnica (CTU, Prague), and Journal of Numerical Analysis and Approximation Theory (formerly Revue d'Analyse Numérique et de Théorie de l'Approximation).
