Non-completion and leave from studies

EARLY NON-COMPLETION – COURSE

If you choose to terminate your studies within three weeks after the course has started it counts as early non-completion. This must be reported to the faculty administrative officer.

In the case of early non-completion, you can apply for the course again at a later date.

LATE NON-COMPLETION – COURSE

Late non-completion means that you terminate your studies after three weeks from when the course started. This must be reported to the faculty administrative officer.

Late non-completion means that you cannot apply for the course again. If you still choose to apply for the course, you will receive a notification that you need to contact the faculty administrative officer for re-registration and resits.

NON-COMPLETION – DEGREE PROGRAMME

If you are enrolled in a degree programme and choose to terminate your studies, you must notify your study counsellor.

LEAVE FROM STUDIES

You have the right to apply for approved leave from studies. If there are special grounds, you will be granted leave from studies with guaranteed admission, which means that you can resume your studies after the leave period. Leave from studies refers to a fixed period, with the possibility of an extension. You can apply based on medical or personal grounds, or other special circumstances. Examples of special grounds are sick leave, care of a child and military duty. This needs to be verified through documentation (e.g., a medical certificate). If the university decides not to approve your application for leave with guaranteed admission, you can submit an appeal to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH). However, if you wish to take leave from your studies for other reasons, for example, to go on a long trip, you have the right to resume your studies subject to available places.

It is important that you contact your study counsellor for more information if you need to apply for leave from your studies. The study counsellor is also the person to whom you submit your application.

It is also important to note that the programme or course may change or be terminated during the leave period. If this is the case, it may affect not completed course components and supplementary studies may be necessary.

If you have student funding, remember to notify CSN that you are terminating your studies. It can also be a good idea to find out what applies in the event that you resume your studies in the future.
