Microsoft Copilot
As a student at Karlstad University, you have the opportunity to use the AI tool Microsoft Copilot. With Copilot, you can utilize a chat function to assist with various tasks, including generating text and images, analyzing data, summarizing documents, writing code, and much more. However, be aware of certain limitations in today’s AI models, where inaccuracies may occur in generated content. Therefore, have a critical approach towards generated information.
Use the AI service sensibly, but do not use it for information related to:
- Direct personal data that clearly identifies an individual.
- Confidential or sensitive personal data.
- Information you do not have the right to freely use.
- Also, consider that other protected information may also be inappropriate to include in the service.
For complete instructions on Copilot and guidance for teachers and students, refer to the information below.
Get started with Microsoft Copilot
- Go to the website copilot.microsoft.com.
- Click on Sign In.
- Log in using your (Kau) email address provided by Karlstad University to access the tool. Private email addresses should not be used. (Kau) e-mail means:
Username: Your KauID followed by @student.kau.se, for example aaaabbbb100 @ student.kau.se (no spaces).
Password is the one you use to log in with your KauID. - You are now logged in and can start using the service.
- "Choose a conversation style" adjusts the creativity of the AI service. In "Creative" mode, it is more imaginative, but there's a higher risk that the information provided may not be accurate. In "Precise" mode, it is more precise and less creative in its responses.
Get started with Copilot sidebar in Microsoft Edge
- Click on the Copilot icon (top right) in the Microsoft Edge browser.
- You’ll now have Copilot in a sidebar on the right-hand side of Microsoft Edge, and you can start using the service directly from here.
- Remember that the “Choose a conversation style” setting determines the AI service’s creativity. In “Creative” mode, it’s more imaginative but may be less accurate. In “Precise” mode, it’s more precise.
- In the Copilot sidebar, you can ask Copilot to, for example, summarize information from a webpage or a PDF file that you have open in Microsoft Edge. The first time you ask such a question, Copilot will prompt you to grant access to the information open in the current tab of Microsoft Edge. Once granted, Copilot will analyze the information. The setting is saved, and the next time you ask Copilot to summarize information, it won’t request permission to analyze the content.
- You only give Copilot permission to analyze the information in the current tab when you ask Copilot to do so. NOTE! Remember that rules regarding personal data also apply when you ask Copilot to analyze information that you have open in Microsoft Edge.
