Last week, fifty ambassadors came to visit Värmland with the purpose to get to know the county, visit local enterprises and make new contacts. The first stop during the visit was at Karlstad University where the university’s two excellent research environments, CTF, Service Research Center and Computer Science presented their research. The ambassadors visit one county in Sweden every year, and this year the trip went to Värmland.

On December 17, 2010, Mohamed Bouazizi, a Tunisian street vendor, set himself on fire as a protest against the autocratic regimes in his Arab country. Bouazizi’s act was captured on film and quickly spread throughout the world. The images and film clips of Bouazizi triggered protests and demonstrations against regimes in other Arab countries. Bouazizi set in motion an uprising against Arab regimes that is known as the Arab Spring.

Service as a phenomenon is what most of us is occupied with; both as employees and how we spend our money. I have spent a lot of time trying to make sense of what it really is. The first thing that is striking with service innovations is that some are easy to copy while others are difficult to copy and latter types work well as differentiators for firms.

Corrinne Kelley, Ph. D Student at Florida State University, USA, is currently visiting CTF for three weeks to work on a joint project with our researchers Anders Gustafsson and Poja Shams. – I am visiting CTF to help run an experiment for a project I have been working on with Anders Gustafsson, Poja Shams and my two advisors Maura L. Scott and Martin Mende. We will be using a scent machine as well as eye tracking technology.

Isn’t it even so that our ‘life baggage’ is obstructing us from certain aspects which may hinder us from a fully embracement of life? The same could be happening for companies. We have had a long debate in service research about how firms can move towards applying a service perspective in their organizations and what benefits the service perspective could result in.

Researchers at CTF have been granted 3.9 million SEK for research on future customer experiences. In the project the researchers will develop new knowledge on how to make retail and the hospitality industry more attractive through digitalization. - The progress of digitalization leads to new ways to consume goods and services and physical stores are finding it increasingly difficult to compete with e-commerce.
